The Client's Challenge
JEOL is a global manufacturer of scientific instruments, including electron microscopes, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) systems – which allow scientists to determine the structure of molecules – and mass spectrometers. The refurbishment of their existing ground-floor facility in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, needed to combine technical demonstration areas, a laboratory environment and attractive customer-facing facilities.
Having previously seen Oaktree’s work after fitting out the space for the tenant in the neighbouring office on Watchmoor Business Park, JEOL approached us to completely transform their customer-facing ground floor. The existing space felt dark and enclosed and they wanted it reimagined into a bright, open environment that would deliver a real “wow” factor for visiting clients.
The project involved:
- Removal and redesign of existing offices with new feature elevations
- Creation of a central demonstration area and laboratory environment
- Large open training/seminar space, meeting rooms and tea point
- Bespoke display cabinets for historical instruments
- New air-conditioning, power, lighting, data, fire and life safety systems
- Flooring in hard-wearing vinyl
- External works including the creation of new plant compound and secure stores
The Solution
We began by carefully stripping out the existing space in accordance with our Waste Management Policy, removing all electrical and mechanical installations, partitions, ceilings and floor finishes. Following this, we installed high-performance acoustic partitions to create new demonstration suites, laboratories and defined area divides, incorporating design-led features such as glass sliding doors and Crittall-style glazing.
A central multi-functional zone was developed to accommodate client experience spaces, training areas and collaborative working. This was complemented by the installation of new feature lighting, upgraded air conditioning and ventilation systems and a state-of-the-art audio-visual solution. To complete the design, we introduced suspended ceiling options which provides access flexibility between suspended grid systems and sleek MF-style smooth ceilings, enhancing both the aesthetic and functionality of the space.

The project combined practical upgrades with quality finishes to create a customer-focused space that strengthens JEOL’s brand and reflects their reputation for innovation.
